Divers watches must withstand uniquely challenging conditions. Seiko makes some amazing and relatively affordable dive watches. Here are 9 of our favorites. When most people think about quality dive watches, Swiss companies like Rolex, Omega and Breitling come to mind. Those are great choices, but their popularity and quality have made them very expensive and sometimes hard to find for the average buyer. Sure, there are budget Swiss brands that make divers, but what about something more unique?

Seiko is a brand that has been making timepieces of all kinds for decades, and their watch selection is hard to beat.

The Swiss watch industry was forever known as the definitive place for world class watches. When you thought of quality you thought of Switzerland, their brands are synonymous with watches themselves; Rolex, Omega, or Breitling and their pedigree amongst divers is unrivaled. Seiko is one of the oldest continuously operating watch companies in the world.

Founded in in Tokyo Japan, Seiko was operating for more than 20 years before Rolex opened their doors in London. They are, without a doubt, one the most important dive watch companies, having introduced their first diver in , not long after Rolex debuted the Submariner in They have made some of the most popular and important mechanical dive watches in the decades that have followed.

For a bit of history — Seiko led the quartz watch revolution in the late s. The oscillating quartz crystal that keeps the beat when charged with electrical current made watches very inexpensive and extremely accurate. Bad news for the swiss mechanical watch industry. Good news for Seiko. They introduced a myriad of quartz watch styles and still do including dive watches. In fact, a friend of mine wore a Seiko quartz diver the entire time he was a saturation diver in the s — a watch he still wears to this day.

It has been a long-standing tradition with any watch loving man to pick up or own his ideal birth year watch. The key is to get something that was manufactured or produced during your birth year. There are others who would want a more specific down to the birth month and birth year BMBY. But a lot would just settle for the birth year.

The dust has settled down. Although people with a small size wrist, say below 17 cm, will think this is rather large. But in fact, it should have been certified. To comply with ISO , this implies that every single produced SKX watch — not just a few samples — should have been pressure tested. And last but not least, the attractive price. Being very affordable, for many, it was their first encounter with an automatic wristwatch.

A lot of positiveness, but of course, there were some negative points about the SKX as well. Still reliable as ever, but with promised accuracy tolerances that were not on par with nowadays standards. That will depend significantly on which part of the SKX was essential for you. For instance, was it the size, the crown at 4, its attractive price, or even something else? The shape is different, though, and it certainly looks to be smaller.

Further, the SRPC35 houses the 4R35 caliber, which sports a day indication only, but no day and date.

Popping the SRPD on your wrist is a bit like catching up with an old friend after a few years of not seeing each other. Some things have changed and some things have stayed the same, but at their core, the personality remains largely the same. The decreased water resistance and lack of screw-down crown immediately jumped out to me as potential problems with what used to be a rock-solid, ISO certified diver. However, the Seiko 5 line is no slouch.

These watches have a history dating back to the early s and were created to be durable and versatile everyday watches that had 5 key features. The new SPRDs earned the 5 badge on their dial by meeting each of these key elements of design. Can this new take on the Seiko SKX hold its own? The dial looks great in bright light and I really enjoyed the matte effect over the metallic dial. The case is standard stainless steel and it ships on a sharp looking mesh steel bracelet.

The blasted gun metal case and textured green dial just remind me of an avocado, and not in a bad way. I like how Seiko opted for green metal hour and minute hands and added an orange seconds hand for a needed pop of color. The included nylon strap matches the dial in color, while the bezel insert is rendered in a deeper teal with a little bit of shine to it. The slightly grainy black dial looks great with the silver applied indices and stark white lume.

The SRPD91 is housed in a gun metal case with both brushed and finished surfaces and has a black bezel insert.

Talking Watches With Todd Levin. Seiko has always created watches around specific sets of clearly defined principles. The delineation of the product line offers clarity to buyers — for every purpose, there’s a watch. Often times the nomenclature of the watch would hint at its intended use. In , the Seiko 5 line was introduced. The watches were geared towards younger buyers who wanted value and style — and Seiko 5 caught on in a big way. Many of these standards almost seem obvious except maybe the crown at 4 , but that’s because watches like the Seiko 5 have contributed to these ideals becoming benchmarks.

Seiko managed to produce a watch that met all the above criteria for a price that was agreeable to younger folks. The Seiko 5 watches were designed with purpose and accessibility in mind; the communication materials and strategy appealed directly to an audience that needed a watch like the Seiko 5: the youth of the ’60s. Today the legendary Seiko 5 Sports line returns, positioned in very much the same fashion as it was when it was first introduced.

The line has traditionally been more closely associated with emerging markets like Southeast Asia rather than the US, but with the recent rebrand and relaunch, that’s changing. And that’s great news for our market, because historically the Seiko 5 models have riffed off Seiko’s core designs, but the watches have been manufactured in a way that made them affordable to a wider audience.

That remains true with the relaunch line-up, as well. The Seiko 5 moniker represents affordability and youthfulness.
